Method
Exact textual and structural recurrence is meaningful evidence even when no creator explains it publicly. Commentary, interviews, scripts, production records and credits can strengthen or confirm a connection. Their absence does not erase a visible textual relationship. This page says how the difference is recorded.
No confidence scores
A percentage implies a measurement nobody took. Each record instead carries a research state grounded in what the source situation supports, and the wording the original research document used is preserved on the record rather than being paraphrased into a house style.
| State | Means | In use |
|---|---|---|
| Documented fact | Rests on scripts, episodes, commentary, interviews, credits, production documents, or comparable sources. | 7 |
| Established interpretation | Combines several matching elements across text, performance, production, or reception. | 26 |
| Scene reading | An interpretation even when strongly supported. | 9 |
| Working hypothesis | Connects evidence that still requires testing. | 8 |
| Unresolved source | Preserves a previously documented finding while making the missing citation explicit. | — |
| Corrected | An earlier reading a later document overturned. The public page shows the current conclusion; the trail stays inspectable. | — |
| Rejected | A candidate examined and not sustained. Retained so the reversal is not lost. | 1 |
Standing principles
- A missing public quote does not disprove intentionality, and resemblance alone does not establish it.
- Failure to locate a source in a quick web search is not evidence that the source or claim does not exist. When the project already identifies an interview, commentary track, script, transcript, file, date, publication, or remembered quotation, that route must be checked directly before the claim can be downgraded.
- Duplicate mentions are not extra votes. Several documents repeating one earlier note is one piece of evidence, not several.
What each kind of evidence can carry
An evidence item has to say what it actually proves. This is the difference between a packet a reader can inspect and a summary a reader has to trust.
| Kind | What it proves |
|---|---|
| Primary text | That the wording, action, or staging exists in the work. It does not establish provenance. |
| Creator statement | What the creator said about method or intent on the record. A statement about method does not confirm one particular reading. |
| Production record | Credits, personnel, studio, or scheduling. Establishes access or overlap, never conscious borrowing. |
| Casting record | Who appeared, and in what prior role. Persona intent needs its own evidence. |
| Contemporaneous reception | That an audience recognised something at the time. It does not prove authorial intent. |
| Commentary track | What the participants said while reviewing their own work. |
| Archival material | That a document or post existed on a date. |
| Scholarship or reference work | An established external fact, such as a term's documented history. |
| Project synthesis | Nothing on its own. It is the argument that the other items form a pattern, and it is labelled as ours. |
Chronology is a hard constraint
An earlier work can inform a later one. A later work cannot become the historical source of an earlier one. Later material can still create a retrospective echo, an actor-history layer, a callback or a reinterpretation, and those are separate relationship types with separate rules. The validator refuses to build the site if an ancestry edge runs backwards.
| Direction class | Rule |
|---|---|
| ancestry | Source must predate target. Violation is a hard validation error. |
| internal | Source and target must belong to the same work. Source should precede target. |
| later echo | Target postdates source, and the record asserts resonance rather than transmission. |
| retrospective | Target postdates source; meaning is created after the source aired. Never evidence of authorial foresight. |
| shared ancestor | Neither side is claimed to inform the other. Both descend from a third object. |
| undirected | No temporal claim is made. |
Amalgams, not copies
A character can inherit one behaviour from one predecessor, a relationship function from another, a scene structure from a film, and a meta layer from an actor’s earlier work. The active ancestor can change by episode or by pairing. The site therefore keeps role mappings local to the comparison that produced them, rather than flattening the research into permanent one-to-one equivalents.
You can see this working on the takeover mirror, where the truth-teller function sits with Abed even though the project’s larger map sends that show’s equivalent character elsewhere.
The relationship registry
34 controlled types, each with an inverse label so one record serves both directions, and each with an allowed direction the validator checks.
| Type | Inverse | Direction | Definition |
|---|---|---|---|
| directly references | is directly referenced by | ancestry | The later work names or depicts the earlier object unmistakably. |
| alludes to | is alluded to by | ancestry | The later work invokes the earlier object without naming it. |
| calls back to | is called back by | ancestry | A later moment depends on the audience remembering an earlier one across works. |
| calls back to (internal) | is called back by (internal) | internal | A later moment in the same work depends on an earlier moment in that work. |
| visually echoes | is visually echoed by | ancestry | Staging, composition, costume, or prop repeats visibly. |
| echoes dialogue of | has dialogue echoed by | ancestry | Exact or near-exact wording recurs between two attested lines. |
| reuses the mechanism of | supplies the mechanism for | ancestry | A repeatable dramatic device recurs while surface content changes. |
| mirrors the plot of | is mirrored by | ancestry | An ordered sequence of beats corresponds across two works. |
| mirrors the subplot of | has its subplot mirrored by | ancestry | A secondary strand corresponds while the A-plots differ. |
| mirrors the scene | is mirrored by the scene | ancestry | One scene corresponds beat for beat with another. |
| inherits a character function from | supplies a character function to | ancestry | A dramatic job travels between characters. Local to the comparison, never a permanent equivalence. |
| amalgamates | feeds the amalgam | ancestry | One later character draws on several predecessors at once, with the active ancestor changing by episode or pairing. |
| inherits structure from | supplies structure to | ancestry | An architectural rule of construction passes between works, such as the NewsRadio pairing matrix. |
| adapts | is adapted by | ancestry | |
| parodies | is parodied by | ancestry | |
| spoofs | is spoofed by | ancestry | |
| pays homage to | receives homage from | ancestry | |
| shares production lineage with | shares production lineage with | undirected | Studio, lot, company, or development-path overlap. Establishes access, never borrowing. A shared employer alone does not prove a callback. |
| shares a writer with | shares a writer with | undirected | Room-written continuity means credited authorship is production history, not proof of who originated a line. |
| shares a performer with | shares a performer with | undirected | |
| shares a guest performer with | shares a guest performer with | undirected | |
| echoes the performance of | has its performance echoed by | ancestry | Delivery, inflection, gesture, or blocking recurs. Requires audiovisual evidence; a transcript cannot carry it. |
| echoes the casting of | has its casting echoed by | ancestry | A casting decision invokes a performer's prior screen identity. |
| musically quotes | is musically quoted by | ancestry | |
| samples | is sampled by | ancestry | |
| covers | is covered by | ancestry | |
| alludes to the text | is alluded to by | ancestry | |
| alludes to the event | is alluded to by | ancestry | |
| is an appearance of | appears in | undirected | |
| is a candidate source for | has as a candidate source | ancestry | Chronology permits transmission and the correspondence is documented, while provenance stays unresolved. |
| shares an ancestor with | shares an ancestor with | shared ancestor | Both descend from a third object; neither is claimed to inform the other. |
| is later echoed by | is a later echo of | later echo | A later object resonates with an earlier one without any claim of transmission. |
| acquires retrospective meaning from | retrospectively colours | retrospective | A performer's later life or career changes how an earlier appearance reads. Never evidence that the earlier writers foresaw it. Joe Rogan's later career colours Joe Garrelli without implying a 1990s writer predicted it. |
| was proposed as connected to | was proposed as connected to | undirected | A candidate the research examined and did not sustain. Retained as a research trail so the reversal is not silently lost. |
Rights
Full transcripts are held privately so research keeps its exact anchors. Public pages show the passages an argument rests on, with the speaker where a source proves one, a locator, and surrounding context. Republishing a complete copyrighted script is a different act from quoting the lines under analysis, and the data model keeps those apart.
Evidentiary images are real or absent. No AI-generated stand-ins for actors, scenes, musicians, historical objects or production stills. Where rights are uncertain, a sourced outbound card appears instead of a fabricated substitute.
