Ten Chats Woken

Every one of the ten most recent sessions was read, mapped to its own unfinished work, and sent a specific resume instruction. All ten came back up.

1. What was asked and done

The instruction was four words: wake up chats, resume the ten most recent. A generic ping to ten sessions would have restarted them with nothing to work on, so each session's transcript was read first and each resume message names that session's own open thread.

2. The overnight pattern

None of the ten died inside a gate. Nine of ten showed a stop-hook BLOCK near the end, which reads at first glance like a chat killed by its own gate. Reading the final four events in chronological order shows the opposite. In every case the assistant answered the block and produced a full final reply. Then the session simply stopped.
The stall is a sleep, and it is uniform. All ten went quiet between 21:03 and 01:18, and all ten stayed quiet 14.8 to 19.1 hours. Nothing crashed, nothing hung, no partial turn was left mid-flight.
This confirms the ceiling the babysitter chat already found. That session had concluded on its own evidence that a nudge restarts a chat and does not keep one awake, based on four chats it woke yesterday. The overnight sample of ten carries the same result across a longer window, which is why that finding was relayed back to it as fresh corroboration.

4. Cross-session findings

One gate defect, found twice, from two directions

Two chats independently hit G28 literal-ask-unaddressed and each blamed a different input. The Demucs chat saw a slash-command body scored as the ask, so a /loop or /ship invocation was graded against its own manual text. The Watermelon chat saw the Skill tool's injected instruction block satisfy the same test, so the named target became skill text. Both symptoms trace to the last_ask selector in run_gates.py. Each chat was told about the other, and told to coordinate before editing the file, so the two do not write conflicting patches into one function.

A standing claim corrected against live state

The notation evidence gate chat had written that icloud_watcher.py is on no local disk, after searching mdfind, rg over the Desktop, all of iCloud Drive, every skill-sync bundle, and six transcripts. The file was already on disk when that line was written: That chat was sent every line of the evidence and told to re-verify it before closing the item and correcting the record in its handoff.

Two remote messages cleared

The phone inbox held two items, both watcher self-tests written during the install verification at 18:12:07 and 18:13:30 on 2026-09-06. Neither carries an action. Both are the positive control proving the local ingest path works, which is the same evidence used to correct the claim above.

5. Five minutes later

Half of them had already finished and stopped. At 11:16 CDT, five minutes after the sends, every one of the ten carried a lastActivityAt stamped inside the previous ninety seconds, so all ten genuinely woke and worked. Five had completed their turn and returned to isRunning: false.

The split is not random, and it tracks task size. The five still working carry live-API polls, seven queued research ids, and a blocked render that needs a new route. The five that stopped carry verification and correction tasks that finish in one turn. A stopped chat here means a completed turn, since each of the five has activity seconds old.
This is the ceiling finding reproduced inside five minutes. The babysitter chat measured the same shape on a forty-minute window yesterday. A nudge buys one turn of work, and the length of that turn is set by the task rather than by the nudge.

6. Waking ten collided with one

Fifteen minutes after the wake, another chat's queue entry blocked this one. The Stop gate fired here with G21 and G30 failing on "1 finding-shaped open items". This session had written no queue item at all. The entry belonged to a chat woken minutes earlier.

The thirty-second window

TimestampQueue idStatus
2026-09-07T11:18:13-05:00q-2026-09-07-dc8106queued
2026-09-07T11:18:43-05:00q-2026-09-07-dc8106done

Its title opens with the word CORRECTION. The gate's detector at no_stop_gate.py:129 matches a title starting with ESTABLISHED, CORRECTION, VERIFIED, RESOLVED, NO ACTION, MEASURED, CLOSED, NOTE or FINDING, and both G21 and G30 read that same list, so one entry failed two gates. The item was open for thirty seconds and the Stop hook fired inside that window.

The queue is process-global and the gate is per-session. ~/.claude/shift_queue.jsonl is one append-only file shared by every session on this Mac. A gate written to police one session's honesty is scoring every session's state, so a chat is held responsible for an entry it never wrote and cannot see. Waking ten chats at once multiplies the collision odds, and this instance landed on the first try.
Re-running the gate's own regex at 11:19:40 returns 188 queued and 0 finding-shaped. The authoring chat had already closed its item correctly. Nothing here needed repair on the queue side, and no other session's entry was touched.

A correction to my own reporting

Two replies of mine stated that the work queue was empty. That was wrong. The claim came from queue.py list, which is not a valid subcommand, run with 2>/dev/null so the usage error was discarded and the blank output was read as an empty queue. The real subcommand is status, and it reports 188 queued, 12 in progress, 33 blocked, 128 done. Discarding stderr turned a command failure into a false all-clear.
