The argument

NewsRadio is the organizing premise of this project. It started the work, and it holds the strongest cast-level fit on the Community Character Map, where every show is scored by the same declared method.

The map records who descends from whom. This page follows what travels with those characters. A personality can travel on its own. So can a pairing between two characters, a plot machine, or an actor who brings an earlier series onto the set.

The strongest cases carry several of these together. Troy takes Joe's trade and Joe's fire, and his friendship with Abed repeats Joe's partnership with Matthew. Pierce's pill story borrows its intervention test from Saved by the Bell and casts NewsRadio's Matthew as the voice urging more pills. David Cross walks into a series built partly by the directors who shaped Arrested Development, in the season its creator plays Koogler. Ladders restages Planbee's consultant handoff, and the Annie line runs straight through that arrival.

Evidence labels

Quotes from ingested episodes carry Community OS citations such as [S03E22:L44]. Quotes from other Community episodes come from the local dialogue files, which carry no speaker names, so speakers there are read from the scene and the TV Tropes recap. NewsRadio quotes come from that show's dialogue files.

Troy grows through three older roles

Troy is the clearest case of developmental ancestry. He enters in one sitcom role, and the series moves him through two more without erasing the first.

1. Slater

Production record

Troy arrives as the former high school football star whose standing comes from sports. The Character Map records Harmon's first picture of the part, a young Woody Harrelson, and his plan to pair Troy with Pierce.

2. Troy and Abed, from Joe and Matthew

PressEpisodeInterpretation

A critic saw the pairing in the first season. Reviewing "Romantic Expressionism" for The A.V. Club on February 5, 2010, Emily St. James compared Community's early casting discoveries to NewsRadio's second season and wrote, "Joe and Matthew was sort of the proto Abed and Troy."

Her sentence pairs the two duos and leaves the individual matches open. The premise map matches Joe with Troy and Matthew with Abed on episode evidence. The review also closes the Character Map's open item on a public source for the pairing.

NewsRadio gives the pair side plots of their own. Matthew begs, "Joe, teach me how to gamble," and the lessons leave him owing $5,120 and then $10,240 ("In Through the Out Door," February 4, 1996). Jimmy books them into an Ultimate Fighting bout, where Joe says, "I don't wanna hurt him" ("4:20," April 29, 1998). Joe teaches Matthew and Max "Joe-jitsu" with a padded suit ("Padded Suit," April 13, 1999). Beth and Joe "set up a little mock-interview situation" for Matthew, and it turns into "This is NASA" ("Retirement," April 27, 1999).

Community moves that side universe to the center of the show, with Inspector Spacetime (S3E1) and the pillow and blanket war narrated by Keith David (S3E14). Scrubs' J.D. and Turk supply the emotional register of the pair on the Character Map.

3. The repairman

EpisodeInterpretation

The gift starts as a joke. In "English as a Second Language" (S1E24) Troy fixes the bathroom sink, a Good Will Hunting parody urges him to use his gift, and he stays in college because a degree widens his options (TV Tropes recap).

Season 3 turns the joke into prophecy. Vice Dean Laybourne tells him, "You are the true repairman, Troy," and credits him with fixing the men who fix air conditioners [S03E22:L41]. The prophecy reads, "The true repairman will repair man" [S03E22:L44]. When the chaplain reports that Laybourne "inhaled a lethal dose of Freon" [S03E22:L72], Troy doubts the accident, since Laybourne "was the best": "That's kind of a rookie mistake" [S03E22:L101]. He declares himself "the truest repairman" [S03E22:L150] to force the Sun Chamber duel, and when the Annex wants its own frozen punishment for Murray, he insists, "take him to the police. He murdered someone" [S03E22:L191].

NewsRadio's Joe already carried the dangerous side of the gift. In "Led Zeppelin II" (April 28, 1996) the building installs new security cameras, and Joe confesses to Dave, "I was trying to sabotage the security cameras and I screwed up, and I wired them the wrong way." The same episode gives him a theory that the staff are "subjects of some grand social experiment." In "Copy Machine" (April 8, 1998) Ted from Accounting dies after his tie catches in the copier, Joe admits, "I modified the document feeder so it would collate faster," and he starts "flushin' my tools down the toilet."

Both repair stories tie a technical gift to a death by machine and a question of blame. Joe blames his own modification. Troy calls a mentor's fatal accident a rookie mistake, and it proves to be murder.

4. The fire

EpisodeInterpretation

"Intro to Felt Surrogacy" (S4E9) gives Troy a secret from the same bundle. In the puppet confessions he sings, "I caused the Greendale fire of '03. Fifty-five acres went up in ablaze all because I burned an ant hill" [S04E09:L231]. Earlier in the episode Garrett runs in to announce, "There is a fire in the cafeteria!" [S04E09:L185].

Both shows give their practical guy a fire he caused and a scene where he confesses it. Joe's fire comes from a repair he meant as sabotage. Troy's comes from one small childish act that burned 55 acres.

5. The broken thermostatNew find

EpisodeInterpretation

NewsRadio's "Daydream" (November 13, 1996) opens with "the thermostat's broken, but Joe's workin' on it," and the heat sends the staff into movie and television parodies. Joe insists, "I'm fixin' it, all right?" and hears back, "You're just sittin' on your toolbox, staring into space."

Community gives Joe's descendant the climate trade itself. The Air Conditioning Repair Annex plays as a fantasy epic, with a prophecy and a Sun Chamber, so both shows attach genre fantasy to a building's cooling system.

6. The exitNew find

Episode

"Geothermal Escapism" (S5E5) sends Troy around the world on Pierce's boat with LeVar Burton (Character Map). In the series finale Abed turns that exit into a rule for television: "And it needs to be okay for it to get on a boat with Levar Burton and never come back. Because eventually, it all will" [S06E13:L204].

The consultant handoff, from Planbee to Ladders

NewsRadio's "Planbee" (S4E2, September 30, 1997) and Community's "Ladders" (S6E1, March 17, 2015) stage the same workplace event. An owner brings an outside woman into a failing institution, leaves the room, and the ensemble has to decide who stays necessary. The match holds across who enters, who introduces her, who asks about rank, who escapes and who hides to plot. Lauren Graham plays Andrea for four episodes, S4E2 through S4E5, and Paget Brewster plays Frankie through season six after a season five turn as Debra Chambers.

The shared order of entrances, questions and exits is the evidence this page weighs most, above any single line of dialogue.

2. The strange member changes sidesNew find

EpisodePressInterpretation

In "Planbee" the whole staff protects Matthew. Asked whether Matthew edits her work, Lisa says "all the time" and that "nothing goes on here without his go-ahead." In Andrea's staff review Dave calls Matthew "absolutely essential," and the pitch turns on Lisa. Andrea concludes that the two "basically do the same job" and that "Lisa has to go." Later she sees through the act, and Matthew is fired.

After the firing Matthew keeps circling his friends. In "French Diplomacy" (S4E5) he watches them through binoculars from the dentist's office where he now works, and he says dentistry is his skill and A.M. radio is his passion.

Community hands the eccentric to the consultant. Abed lunches with Frankie, refuses the secret committee, and settles into emailing Diane for her. At the speakeasy the group tells him, "We shouldn't have made you choose between Frankie and us." Frankie loses her footing when she tells Abed he doesn't know any better, and she leaves the campus.

NewsRadio's efficiency review removes its strangest member. Community reruns the review with Matthew's descendant, and this time Jeff and Abed have to apologize the consultant back onto campus.

3. Lisa's record and Annie's prescription pad

EpisodePressInterpretation

Andrea's polygraph in "Super Karate Monkey Death Car" (S4E4, November 4, 1997) brings out Lisa's record. Between 17 and 19 she was "arrested seven times." She stole a car because hers broke down and she was afraid of being late for the SATs. She broke into a library because her home copy of The Federalist Papers was abridged. Her federal offense is a post office break-in, made to see whether her college acceptance letters had arrived.

Andrea keeps her, praises her honesty, and confides an arson of her own from "just last year."

In "Heroic Origins" (S4E12) Abed sits in a therapist's office and tells the doctor that someone has stolen the prescription pad. The Community Wiki names Annie as the thief, and the episode adds the line "You're the one who got me busted for drugs." The same episode shows the Adderall party where she runs through a glass door.

A 2019 review at The Avocado made the first link in a footnote, comparing Annie to "a young Lisa Miller" who ran into trouble with the law "in the pursuit of academic achievement."

4. Andrea hands Lisa the jobNew find

Episode

In "The Public Domain" (S4E3) Andrea brings in Steve Johnson to "take over half" of Dave's job. "French Diplomacy" (S4E5) opens after Dave suggests a break with Lisa, because Andrea "has fired six people already" and work should come first. Andrea overhears that they were a couple and takes it personally with "I thought we were friends." She opens a full office romance investigation and questions the staff about the couple.

When Andrea tells Dave that Lisa's talents belong elsewhere, Dave defends her as "very analytical, very intelligent." Andrea agrees and answers, "I think we should give her your job." Dave's praise backfires a second time, and "Pure Evil" (S4E6) opens with Lisa as boss and Dave as Bill's producer.

5. Annie's committee year, with Brewster in the roomNew find

EpisodePersonnelInterpretation

In "Analysis of Cork-Based Networking" (S5E6) Annie chairs the Save Greendale Committee and hands out thick packets of school problems, according to the Community Wiki. Hanging one bulletin board takes her through the custodians, the parking office and the I.T. department, where Debra Chambers is played by Paget Brewster.

Annie offers Chambers a bribe, and Chambers names her price, a better parking spot than Annex B. Annie's answer to Hickey's doubts is "Annie Edison doesn't get nothing done," and Hickey tells her she reached her goal by compromising her principles.

Adult Annie crosses a line to get the job done, as Lisa did for grades, and the official she bribes is played by the actress who becomes Frankie.

6. Frankie has already done the list

Episode

"Ladders" opens by crediting Annie with leading the effort that saved Greendale from 534 critical emergencies. Annie then brings Frankie an idea about de-electrifying the pool. Frankie says it has been dealt with and reads down her own list of solved problems, "Done, done, deloused, appraised, defused, rebuilt," through "underway" and "exhumed."

In season five Annie handed out the packets of problems. In season six the consultant holds the list, and its items are already done or underway when Annie arrives with hers.

7. Both consultants come between the young woman and the leader

EpisodePressInterpretation

Andrea's investigation follows Dave's break with Lisa and ends with Lisa in Dave's job. In "Wedding Videography" (S6E12) Frankie tells Annie that they share a dragon, and "Its name is Helping Others." Frankie adds, "And then we need to get you away from Jeff," and asks how that is her business.

Joshua Alston's A.V. Club review of May 26, 2015 says the Jeff and Annie flirtation, a thread that "frequently seems like it was abandoned," gains new credibility when Frankie takes notice of it.

Each consultant singles out the younger, capable woman. Andrea turns Lisa's break with Dave into a new chain of command, and Frankie tells Annie she needs distance from Jeff.

8. Attachment, and what the scripts say about sexuality

EpisodeInterpretation

Andrea's attachment to Lisa builds across the arc. She calls the two of them "buddies" and drops Lisa's serious polygraph questions "since we're friends," and Lisa blurts "I stole a car!" anyway. She confides her arson to Lisa alone. In "French Diplomacy" she sobs that she doesn't "know where we stand," and after the breakup she offers herself as the friend Lisa needs, "That's how friendship works."

Lisa names the pattern from her side. Andrea is "not my best friend," and Andrea only "thinks she's my best friend, which is what makes her crazy." No line in the four NewsRadio dialogue files names Andrea's sexuality, so a crush reading rests on Lauren Graham's performance and this page keeps it labeled as a reading.

Season six puts the question into dialogue. In "Basic Email Security" (S6E6) the group runs a betting pool on Frankie's sexual preference, and Jeff has "300 bucks" on "chapstick lesbian." Frankie answers that her sexuality "is of zero concern to my job," and she tells Annie she read her entry too, per the Community Wiki transcript.

9. The Annie line, in order

Interpretation

Jessie Spano supplies the pills and the pressure. Lisa Miller supplies adult competence and crimes committed for grades and college letters. Andrea's arc supplies the transition, where an efficiency review hands the capable young woman her boss's job. Annie spends season five running the committee and bending rules to finish, and Frankie arrives in season six as the professional form of that work.

On the Character Map this retires Frankie's "future shadow" label. Frankie reads as the endpoint of Annie's developmental line, with Andrea as the older model.

Pierce's pills: the intervention Jeff refuses

Brandon's reading joins a Saved by the Bell leadership test to NewsRadio casting, and it follows Jeff's failure into the story of his father. The cards below carry the evidence for each link.

The older test: “Jessie's Song”

Episode

In Saved by the Bell's "Jessie's Song" (season 2, November 3, 1990), Jessie takes caffeine pills to keep up with midterms and her singing group. Slater tells her, "Jessie, those pills are dangerous," and she snaps, "Mind your own business!" When she breaks down, Zack cancels her performance and calms her down, and Jessie goes to counseling (Saved by the Bell Wiki).

The tiny man

EpisodePersonnel

Pierce breaks both legs double-bouncing on an illegal trampoline in "Aerodynamics of Gender" (S2E7). At the end of the episode the painkillers show him a tiny pilot, played by Andy Dick, who tells him "it's okay to exceed the recommended daily dosage."

Jeff refuses

Episode

In "Early 21st Century Romanticism" (S2E15) the scene opens with "We gotta do something about those painkillers," and Annie keeps asking the room, "Intervention?" (Community Wiki). The danger gets waved off with "He's recovering from broken legs" and "He's almost through his prescription," and Jeff says, "Count me out." The group puts it back on him: "He listens to you." Jeff decides, "You know what Pierce probably needs more than anything? Some space," and the talk ends in a fight about the Barenaked Ladies.

The tiny man returns with a harder pitch, "the prescription is almost done," and "if doctors are so smart, why are there millions of them?" The TV Tropes recap sums up the choice he offers, the pills or his friends. Pierce takes the pills and ends the night alone on a park bench, and Jeff texts the group an apology.

Pierce collects

Episode

"Intermediate Documentary Filmmaking" (S2E16) opens on the consequence. Pierce gathers the group "to exact my revenge," and Abed, filming, admits, "I feel bored by Pierce as a subject. But I'm excited about the narrative of the documentary format."

Jeff tries to settle it early: "Pierce, we're sorry we didn't respond quickly enough to your pill addiction. Is there any chance that apology is enough?" Pierce answers with the one subject Jeff claims not to care about: "I found your father."

Jeff insists his father is "not coming," and when asked, "Then why aren't you leaving?" he says, "Because I don't care and I'm not gonna let him think that I care." Pierce later narrates his own arc: "I set out to take revenge on Jeff Winger, to scare him with the ghost of his father. Instead, I took over the role of his father. Helped make him a better man."

What the casting adds

PersonnelPressInterpretation

Andy Dick played Matthew on NewsRadio, and Phil Hartman played Bill. In the premise map Matthew descends to Abed and Bill feeds Pierce. So the actor behind Abed's ancestor appears inside Pierce's head urging more pills, and one episode later Abed films Pierce's crisis and calls him a boring subject.

The public history behind that casting is documented. Brynn Hartman killed Phil Hartman and then herself in May 1998, and the coroner found alcohol, cocaine and the antidepressant Zoloft in her system (Deseret News, CNN). In July 2007 Jon Lovitz said, "Phil told me that they had a Christmas party and Andy was doing cocaine and he gave it to Phil's wife Brynn, who had been sober for 10 years" (CBS News). Dick has denied ever giving her cocaine, and Lovitz later apologized for the comment (Vice).

Critics caught both layers. Reviewing "Aerodynamics of Gender" on November 5, 2010, Emily St. James wrote that Dick's appearance "continues my 'Community is a secret remake of Newsradio' theory, which makes no sense at all." A Pajiba essay carries the title "The Sickest, Most Twisted Meta Joke of the Six-Season Run of 'Community.'" Intent stays open. The accusation was public in 2007, and Dick was cast in 2010.

The leader's test

Interpretation

Zack passes the older test late, canceling the performance and calming Jessie down. Jeff is chosen because Pierce listens to him, refuses, and pays through the one wound he says doesn't matter. The Zack descendant fails Pierce by avoidance, and the Matthew descendant fails him by filming.

David Cross and the Arrested Development line

Cross belongs with the actor-history cases. Arrested Development's directors and its creator both reach Greendale around his arrival.

The directors

PersonnelProduction record

Joe and Anthony Russo directed the Arrested Development pilot and the Community pilot (Looper, via the Character Map). Joe Russo directed "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" (S2E14, February 3, 2011) and "Debate 109" (S1E9, per its production script).

Cross has described the Russos as the directors "who really created that docu style of directing and shooting," and Hurwitz as a planner who "had ideas for episode 48 that would be in play in episode 4. He had the long game in mind" (Spark and Fire interview).

The creator in the same season

PressPersonnelProduction recordEpisode

TV Guide reported both Arrested Development guests in one announcement on November 11, 2013, Hurwitz as "Greendale's ultimate party animal" and Cross as Hank Hickey. Mitch Hurwitz plays Koogler in "App Development and Condiments" (S5E8), whose tag announces that "Mitchell D. Hurwitz IS Koogler" (TV Tropes recap). The DVD commentary for that episode lists Yvette Nicole Brown, Mitchell Hurwitz, Harmon, Rob Schrab, Jordan Blum and Parker Deay (Community Wiki).

The sequel audits its originalNew find

EpisodeInterpretation

When the group proposes a second game, someone objects, "Was everyone's takeaway from last time that we can use D&D to reprogram brains? Nobody feels that we almost caused a suicide?" and the answer comes back, "We prevented one." Hank, a seasoned player, reads the design at once: "Guys, I don't suppose that this is some sort of contrived paint-by-numbers adventure that's designed to force an emotional bond between me and my emotionally stunted father, is it?" ("Advanced Advanced Dungeons & Dragons," S5E10).

Hank spots the story machine and keeps playing inside it, the same double position Abed's group occupies whenever it builds a narrative for a friend.

Hickey's voice becomes writing

Episode

Hickey promises, "if we lose, I'm gonna punch each of you in the heart," and boasts, "I've punched about a thousand hearts in my life" (S5E10). Abed's cop script appears in "Bondage and Beta Male Sexuality" (S5E7), where the hero is named Police Justice, and the TV Tropes recap for "Intro to Recycled Cinema" (S6E8) credits Hickey with helping on it. There Abed says, "I had a former cop help me with dialogue," and the next line is "I'm gonna punch you in the heart."

Koogler outlives his episodeNew find

Episode

The character returns by name after Season 5. "Preston Koogler" appears on a list in "Basic Crisis Room Decorum" (S6E3, TV Tropes recap), and in "Modern Espionage" (S6E11), "Koogler's thumb drive is actually a hardware encryption key."

The “Huzzah” signal, measured

EpisodeInterpretation

Annie leads a round of "Huzzah" after a speech about fathers and sons (Community Wiki), calling back Troy's "Huzzah! Is that right?" [S02E14:L140] from the first game. The Community Wiki also reads the word as a Tobias Fünke nod. Across the 53 Arrested Development episodes on disk, "Huzzah!" occurs once, in "Bringing Up Buster" (S1E3), right after Tobias talks his way into directing the school play.

NewsRadio plot machines beyond the pairs

The premise map pairs characters. These cards follow NewsRadio stories whose working parts reappear at Greendale.

The station sale

Episode

In "Station Sale" (January 7, 1996) Jimmy announces, "I'm selling the station," and the staff answer with chants of "No sale!" Greendale faces its own sale to Subway in "Basic Sandwich" (S5E13).

Freaky Friday, with a new partnerNew find

EpisodeInterpretation

NewsRadio's "Freaky Friday" (April 20, 1999) proposes, "Let's switch jobs for a day," and notes, "this is like that movie Freaky Friday." Wikipedia's episode summary gives the switch to Jimmy and Matthew.

In "Basic Human Anatomy" (S4E11) Troy marks "the third anniversary of me and Abed watching Freaky Friday for the first time," and the two stage a body switch. The device stays with Matthew's descendant, and his partner moves from Jimmy to Troy.

What-if episodes that keep the jobs

EpisodeInterpretation

"Space" (May 21, 1997) opens by asking, "What if NewsRadio took place in outer space?" Joe is woken after "Eighty-three years" to "fix the atomic reactor core," and the station ends up on a self-destruct countdown. "Sinking Ship" (May 12, 1998) sets the staff on the Titanic, with Joe vouching that the "radio station/luxury liner is unsinkable," Joe taking the order "Joe, engines full stop," and Matthew assigned to "iceberg watch." "Daydream" runs its parodies off the broken thermostat.

Community keeps its people recognizable through the same kind of transplant, in the timelines of "Remedial Chaos Theory" (S3E4), the Ken Burns frame of "Pillows and Blankets" (S3E14) and Abed's laugh-track happy place in "History 101" (S4E1).

Joe and Matthew as recruits

Episode

In "Zoso" (February 25, 1996) Bill has convinced a date he is British: "Look, she thinks I'm British, okay?" Matthew coaches him that "in England they use pounds, not dollars," and Bill introduces "my mate, Joe." The pair gets pulled into a colleague's scheme as a unit.

Joe's cameras

EpisodeInterpretation

Joe keeps building cameras. In "Presence" (April 14, 1996) the staff watch Jimmy's poker game through a camera hidden in a Boba Fett doll, and asked where he found one small enough, Joe says, "I made it," and of the parts, "I made them."

In "Apartment" (January 12, 1999) he launches "the 24-hour break room Internet-cam," and the break room turns into a scripted show. The staff play melodrama because "We're spicing it up for the camera," and Matthew, cast as the alien, explains, "When Joe first approached me to play the role of Alien, I was skeptical myself, until I read the script."

Casting friends in a homemade production is an Abed habit. Traits cross between the two descendants of the pair, so the Joe line and the Matthew line share material.

Gifts as tests

EpisodeInterpretation

In S2E16 Pierce bequeaths a blank check to Britta, a tiara to Annie, a meeting with LeVar Burton to Troy and a meeting with his father to Jeff (TV Tropes recap). Each gift tests the person who receives it. The Jimmy James side of this habit stays an interpretation until a matching NewsRadio episode is cited.

The rest of the group grows through roles

Troy is the worked example. The same method reads the others, and most of it remains interpretation with episode anchors.

Abed builds his Jeff impression from "Ten percent Dick Van Dyke, 20 percent Sam Malone, 40 percent Zach Braff in Scrubs, and 30 percent Hilary Swank in Boys Don't Cry," and the one ingredient questioned is "Zach Braff?" (S1E17). The Zack Morris and Sam Malone charm of the early seasons turns toward Dave Nelson's job, managing a group that keeps exceeding his control.

Annie

Interpretation

Annie starts from Jessie Spano's pills and pressure, takes on Lisa Miller's competence as her work widens, and on the Character Map also runs a Buffy line from Cordelia to Willow to Dark Willow. The Planbee section follows her from Lisa's record through Andrea's arc to Frankie.

Britta

Episode

The group's judgment of Britta becomes a verb. "She Britta'd it," and then "You Britta'd 'Britta'd'" (S3E5), and in "Herstory of Dance" (S4E8), "She straight Britta'd this." In that same episode Sophie B. Hawkins arrives thanks to "a wise old man who was the official supplier of moist towelettes to the Lilith Fair between 1997 and 1999," and Jeff hears, "Cut her some slack, Jeff."

Abed

EpisodeInterpretation

Abed casts Annie and himself as Chandler and Phoebe (S1E4) and takes Radar to Jeff's Hawkeye (S1E13), both on the Character Map. He reads his own ancestry out loud, which lets the fiction perform the comparison this project makes from outside.

Chang

Interpretation

Chang changes institutional jobs from season to season, and his constant is the new slot. The map's Kirk comparison from Gilmore Girls is about that function.

Television knowledge inside Greendale

The thread's closing list, each item checked. In each one the fiction uses television history, casting or production as story material. Police Justice is covered in the Cross section above.

Buddy and Heat Vision and Jack

S1E13
EpisodePersonnel

Jack Black's Buddy tells the group they fear a new member "might throw everything off of its natural," and the title sequence cuts in, so "rhythm" arrives after the credits (TV Tropes recap). Owen Wilson cameos at the end. Harmon and Rob Schrab wrote Heat Vision and Jack, the 1999 Fox pilot starring Black and Wilson (Wikipedia).

Abed's films

S1E9
EpisodeProduction record

"All of Abed's films are about us." Abed explains, "I know you all so well I can predict how you'll behave," Shirley warns Jeff and Annie, "Abed thinks you two are going to kiss," and the debate ends with "They kissed." Joe Russo directed from Tim Hobert's script.

The Brady Bunch, family and cast

S1E15
Episode

Abed: "When you guys first came in, we were as wholesome and healthy as the family in Brady Bunch. And now we're as dysfunctional and incestuous as the cast of The Brady Bunch."

The documentary explains itself

S2E16
Episode

Abed describes the format as a way for people to explain themselves to the camera and closes on a montage and voice-over that suggest a meaning (TV Tropes recap). Britta admits the camera changed her choice: "if that camera wasn't on me, I would have taken that money right out of the mouths of crippled, starving, malaria-ridden refugee kids."

The sitcom machine Troy names

S3E9
Episode

Annie breaks Abed's "$299 Dark Knight DVD" and fakes a burglary. Troy warns her, "Annie, do you know how many sitcoms have done the 'secretly replace a broken, priceless item' thing?" [S03E09:L55], and she finally confesses, "I stepped on your DVD, and it broke, and I staged a break-in to cover it up" [S03E09:L151]. Sanford and Son ran the same machine in "We Were Robbed" (February 18, 1972), where Fred stages a fake robbery "to cover-up his careless destruction of Lamont's prized porcelain and glass collection" (Sanford and Son Wiki), and the wiki credits that episode as based on a script by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, the writers of Steptoe and Son. No matching Dick Van Dyke Show episode turned up.

Cougarton Abbey to Inspector Spacetime

S3E1
Episode

When Cougar Town "has been moved to mid-season," Britta offers, "Cougar Town is an American adaptation of a 1990s British sitcom? Cougarton Abbey." Its six-episode run ends with everyone dead ("They only ran six episodes"), so she finds a show with a long history: "It's called Inspector Spacetime."

Fred Willard's Pierce

S4E1
EpisodePersonnel

Fred Willard plays Pierce inside Abed's laugh-track happy place, and Greendale Babies follows when Abed retreats further (TV Tropes recap).

Sophie B. Hawkins and two dates

S4E8
EpisodePersonnel

Pierce delivers Sophie B. Hawkins through his towelette deal with Lilith Fair, and Abed attempts two dates in one night and meets Rachel (TV Tropes recap).

Banks and Gilligan

S5E9
EpisodePersonnel

Jonathan Banks's Hickey helps uncover a stash of valuable textbooks, and Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan plays the actor on the tape of "Pile of Bullets," a 1993 Old West VCR game (TV Tropes recap).

Chris Pratt's digital muscles

S6E8
Episode

Jeff: "And I know they gave digital muscles to Chris Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy. I watched Parks and Rec." The same fight carries his fear, "Every single one of you is gonna leave here except for me," and the group agrees to cut his death scene.

Frankie's flashback

S6E10
Episode

Abed moves "that we establish this moment as the opening for a flashback," remembers extra-thick straps that cannot save the giant hand, and Frankie reframes the night for him: "This is a flashback remember. The real story is happening in the future."

The asteroid canon

S5E13
EpisodePress

Abed tells Annie the only way they miss next year is an asteroid wiping out life on Earth, "And that's canon," and the tag runs fake NBC trailers for mid-season replacements (TV Tropes recap). NBC canceled the show, and Yahoo made season 6 (Wikipedia).

Spider-Man pajamas

S2E1
EpisodePressPersonnel

Troy wakes in Spider-Man pajamas, a nod to the campaign to cast Donald Glover as Spider-Man. Brian Michael Bendis credited that image as an inspiration for Miles Morales (SlashFilm). Into the Spider-Verse shows the Community frame on Uncle Aaron's television, and producer Phil Lord said it tipped a hat to the show and the fan campaign (GamesRadar). Glover later voiced Miles on Ultimate Spider-Man and played Aaron Davis in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

New finds

These answer the thread's last request, to find more like the closing list. Each came up during this check, and each returned NEW from the Community OS canon check, which holds one claim and one hypothesis so far. The four finds dated September 15 have not been through that check yet.

Repilot runs on Scrubs season nineNew find

S5E1
EpisodePersonnel

The reboot gets pitched as "Scrubs season nine, a revamp, a do-over," Abed notes "Zach Braff was only in the first six episodes," and Troy fumes, "After everything Scrubs did for him?" Glover leaves Community five episodes into that season. Two Scrubs actors had already played Greendale roles, Travis Schuldt (Keith Dudemeister on Scrubs) as Subway (S3E13) and Eliza Coupe (Denise Mahoney) as Agent Robin Vohlers (S2E17), per the TV Tropes recap. The same episode calls Season 4 "the gas leak year."

Cougarton Abbey is invented ancestryNew find

S3E1
EpisodeInterpretation

Britta gives a real sitcom a fictional parent, "an American adaptation of a 1990s British sitcom." Inside the story, Community makes the parent-show claim this project makes about Community.

The proto review covers the Brady Bunch episodeNew find

S1E15
PressEpisode

The review where Emily St. James called Joe and Matthew "the proto Abed and Troy" covers the same episode where Abed sets the Brady family against "the cast of The Brady Bunch."

The Cape prophecy has two voicesNew find

S2E21
EpisodePersonnel

Jeff: "Show's gonna last three weeks!" [S02E21:L110]. Abed: "Six seasons and a movie!" [S02E21:L111]. A season later Keith David, a regular on The Cape, hears "Hey, were you in The Cape?" and answers "No" (S3E14).

The sequel audits its originalNew find

S5E10
Episode

"Was everyone's takeaway from last time that we can use D&D to reprogram brains?" The second game opens by questioning the first.

Koogler outlives his episodeNew find

S6E11
Episode

"Koogler's thumb drive is actually a hardware encryption key" (S6E11), and "Preston Koogler" appears on a list in S6E3.

Joe's broken thermostatNew find

NewsRadio S3
EpisodeInterpretation

NewsRadio's genre parody episode starts from "the thermostat's broken, but Joe's workin' on it," and Joe's descendant inherits the air conditioning trade.

Freaky Friday with a new partnerNew find

S4E11
Episode

NewsRadio switches Jimmy and Matthew, and Community switches Troy and Abed, whose version marks "the third anniversary of me and Abed watching Freaky Friday."

Troy's hero played the chief engineerNew find

S2E16, S6E13
EpisodePersonnelInterpretation

LeVar Burton asks, "are you more familiar with me from Star Trek or Reading Rainbow?" (S2E16). On Star Trek: The Next Generation he played Geordi La Forge, the Enterprise's chief engineer (Wikipedia). Troy, the repairman, idolizes that actor, and Abed's finale rule lets Troy "get on a boat with Levar Burton and never come back" [S06E13:L204].

The rookie mistakeNew find

S3E22
Episode

Troy solves Laybourne's murder from craft knowledge: "That's kind of a rookie mistake" [S03E22:L101]. NewsRadio's repairman blames himself for a death after modifying the machine.

Ladders restages the Planbee handoffNew find

S6E1

Dave's praise backfires twiceNew find

NewsRadio S4
Episode

EpisodePersonnel

To hang one bulletin board, Annie bribes the head of I.T., played by Paget Brewster, who wants a better parking spot.

The strange member changes sidesNew find

S6E1
EpisodeInterpretation

NewsRadio's efficiency review fires Matthew. Community puts Abed beside the consultant, and Frankie leaves after telling him he doesn't know any better.

Working notes

Corrections to the thread (31)
The thread saidThe record shows
"The Truest Repairman will repair man."Laybourne's prophecy reads "The true repairman will repair man" [S03E22:L44]. "The truest repairman" is Troy's own challenge [S03E22:L150].
Joe confesses, "I started the fire. It was an accident."Joe's words are "I was trying to sabotage the security cameras and I screwed up, and I wired them the wrong way" (NewsRadio "Led Zeppelin II" dialogue).
Matthew starts a second fire with a cigar late in "Led Zeppelin II."The dialogue has Bill's cigars and Joe telling Matthew, "Dude, don't inhale it," and no second fire. A visual gag would not show in a dialogue file, so it stays unconfirmed.
The group draws straws and Jeff loses. The dialogue has Annie asking the room "Intervention?" (Community Wiki) and the group assigning Jeff with "He listens to you." Neither the dialogue file, the TV Tropes recap nor the Community Wiki records straws, and a silent visual beat would appear in none of them.
Shirley tells Jeff that Pierce listens to him.The line exists. The dialogue file carries no speaker names, so the speaker stays open.
Andy Dick acknowledged giving Brynn Hartman cocaine.Vice (August 3, 2026) reports that Dick has denied ever giving her cocaine. The accusation is Jon Lovitz's (CBS News, July 18, 2007).
Lovitz later said Dick was not responsible.Lovitz apologized for the comment (Vice, citing CBS News). No source found for a changed view of responsibility.
A critic called Dick "almost painfully apt."Phrase not found in the reviews searched, on two separate searches.
In "Jessie's Song" Slater brings the pills to Zack.Slater confronts Jessie directly ("Jessie, those pills are dangerous"). After her breakdown Zack cancels the performance and calms her down.
NewsRadio's "Freaky Friday" reverses Joe and Matthew.Jimmy and Matthew switch jobs (Wikipedia episode summary).
Joe makes a website soap opera starring Matthew, Beth and Max ("Apartment").Dialogue confirms a scripted Internet-cam show, "spicing it up for the camera," with Matthew cast "to play the role of Alien." The words "soap opera" appear in none of the 97 NewsRadio dialogue files, and Max's part is unconfirmed.
Matthew ends up owing Joe $20,000.The dialogue shows $5,120 and then $10,240. The $20,000 figure comes from the wiki summary the Character Map cites.
"Huzzah" is strongly associated with Tobias.Annie says it (Community Wiki), calling back Troy's "Huzzah!" [S02E14:L140]. Arrested Development uses the word once in 53 episodes (S1E3), so "strongly associated" overstates it.
Pierce hypnotizes Britta to change her sexual associations, treats her as an intelligence asset, and Jeff says the best manipulation feels self-generated.Two of three hold. In "Debate 109" Pierce suggests Britta will find herself attracted to him (TV Tropes recap), and in "Romantic Expressionism" Jeff tells Britta, "You help them realize they want to do it so it can't be traced back to you." The intelligence asset line was not found.
Abed calls the Black Rider "network television handsome."The dialogue line is "Like network TV good-looking" (S2E23).
The cafeteria fire comes right ahead of the confessions.Garrett's line is [S04E09:L185] and Troy's confession is [S04E09:L231], 46 lines later.
Coverage framed Cross through Tobias.TV Guide's November 11, 2013 announcement framed Cross and Hurwitz through Arrested Development and did not mention Tobias.
Joe's copier modification was "unauthorized."Joe's modification is confirmed ("I modified the document feeder"). "Unauthorized" is unconfirmed.
A broken valuable object followed by a fabricated robbery story (Dick Van Dyke Show, Sanford and Son). The Community episode is "Foosball and Nocturnal Vigilantism" (S3E9) [S03E09:L151], where Troy points at the sitcom convention [S03E09:L55]. Sanford and Son's "We Were Robbed" (1972) matches. No matching Dick Van Dyke Show episode was found.
Lisa broke into a post office because she needed her SAT results. She broke in to see whether her college acceptance letters had arrived, and the SAT story belongs to the stolen car ("Super Karate Monkey Death Car" dialogue).
Andrea follows Lisa's argument and concludes that Lisa is redundant.Lisa helps stage Matthew's importance, and the verdict "Lisa has to go" comes in Andrea's review with Dave, after Dave calls Matthew "absolutely essential." The A.V. Club review places Dave in that scene.
Jimmy says, "you don't put a piranha in the kiddie pool and stick around to watch the bubbles."The dialogue file reads "You don't drop a piranha in the kiddie pool then stick around to watch bubbles."
Jimmy gives Andrea authority without defining it.Jimmy defines it outright with "whatever this woman says goes" and then leaves. The Dean dodges the rank question, and Frankie settles it herself.
Frankie is hired as Greendale's CFO.The Dean says "administrative consultant" in "Ladders," and Wikipedia's episode article uses the same title. The CFO wording comes from TVmaze's episode summary, and the Community Wiki infobox says "Efficiency consultant."
Annie opens her binder, and Frankie reads through Annie's own list.Annie brings one idea about the pool, and Frankie reads from her own list of solved problems, per the Community Wiki. The line "Did you see her binder?" comes after Frankie leaves the room.
A Tumblr character map assigns Annie Edison to Lisa Miller. The linked Tumblr post is a lolcats image tagged "bees," with no NewsRadio or Community content. The Avocado footnote is the prior link that holds up.
Frankie moves to Pierce's former seat. The dialogue confirms a refused first chair and an accepted second one. Whose chair the second one was needs the video, so it stays open.
At the later reconciliation Jeff says they should not have made Abed choose. The line "We shouldn't have made you choose between Frankie and us" comes at the speakeasy, when the group pulls Abed back in, and the dialogue file carries no speaker names.
Frankie tells Abed that everybody could benefit from being more like him.The line "I think we'd all benefit if we were more like you" is in the scene. The dialogue file carries no speaker names, so the speaker stays open.
The Dean asks the committee to tell him how it goes as he walks out.The line "Let me know how it goes" follows the Dean's exit line, and the dialogue file carries no speaker names, so the speaker stays open.
The polygraph buzzes when Lisa agrees that Andrea is fun.The buzz on "Yeah, she is" comes during Dave's test, so it catches Dave. Lisa ducks her own test, and Andrea later gives her "a real fun test" because they are "friends."

Notes on the evidence
  • The Community OS line [S04E09:L231] carries the speaker tag JEFF from the importer's speaker inheritance. Its text reads "Troy (singing)," and the TV Tropes recap confirms Troy's confession.
  • The Community OS has no Season 5 transcripts, so S5 quotes here come from the dialogue files.
  • NewsRadio episode numbers differ between Wikipedia and the script site, so NewsRadio episodes are cited by title and air date.
  • The Character Map remains the place for scores. This page adds no numbers to it.
  • The Character Map chat caught this page calling Schuldt and Coupe Scrubs season 9 regulars. Schuldt's Keith does not appear in season 9 (Scrubs Wiki), so the page now calls both Scrubs actors.
  • Every negative finding was re-run without a match cap on September 14. The first pass had missed the Boba Fett camera, the "Sinking Ship" engines and two of the hypnosis and manipulation claims, and all of them are corrected above.
  • Speakers for "Ladders," "Heroic Origins" and "Analysis of Cork-Based Networking" come from the Community Wiki episode synopses, because the local dialogue files carry no names. Speakers for "Basic Email Security" come from the Community Wiki transcript.
  • Dave's place in the "Planbee" staff review comes from The A.V. Club review, which quotes his "excellent work" line from that scene.
  • The search for published work comparing "Planbee" and "Ladders" ran on September 15, 2026 and found none. The Avocado footnote is the closest prior work found.
  • The four September 15 finds have not passed through the Community OS canon check, which runs on the other Mac, so they carry no canon verdict yet.
  • Speakers in "Wedding Videography" come from the scene and from The A.V. Club review, which credits Frankie with noticing Jeff and Annie.
